The inclusion of artificial intelligence into daily enterprise has been a long time coming, and it is finding a home in industries such as education which rely upon structured, methodological planning and execution by understanding the context of the student’s wants and needs. Online education has been expanding over the last decade, with establishments like Coursera, DNV GL, TMI, etc. and the opportunity to merge these programs and styles of teaching with machine learning, interactive AI has been a source of wide discussion in terms of purpose and implementation. The idea has been growing popular and early versions of this approach have begun to take shape already.
Ashok Goel is a professor at Georgia Technological University who taught computer science to an online course for Artificial Intelligence and he created an AI chatbot to act as a virtual assistant and liaison between his students and himself. This software was built upon Microsoft’s Watson project technology and innovation. This AI drew information from forums and journals about relevant queries and information required by students. This was a social experiment, in that, the 300 strong student class was not informed that they were interacting with an AI assistant rather than Ashok Goel himself and the move gained massive popular opinion for its execution and application. It has been one of the most resounding breakthroughs in the application of AI technology in education till date and has set an ambitious, and diverse precedent.
That being said, there has been a great deal of paranoia about the involvement of this modern technology as the educational industry thrives on professionals and their respective disciplinary expertise. With development of similar systems and tools, many researchers anticipate that humans may begin losing their jobs in academia to robots or virtual machines. With the advancements in technology, the applications of machine learning appear to cause huge global disruption, and alter the approach teachers have towards online education and classroom interaction. Most job roles require university degrees as a starter qualification, and the best positions are reserved for the students from top universities around the globe.
AI programming such as this has been used in diverse roles- having a hand in music writing, manual labour and even logistical conveniences, etc. It has integrated itself into the functions of various aspects of life. With the rise of online education, students are increasingly reliant on online education and personalized software to help them grow so this will be an augmentation to that process. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been part of a global effort to bring technology and AI into the classroom and enable a generation of students to study how they choose. Even Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has invested his income in future teaching technologies and this shows us that there is a growing trend and a mounted drive to popularize these alternative approaches to educational instruction.
Machine learning AI tools need to grow in diversity and relevance as multi-cultural environments continue to thrive and cater to its growing needs, which is beginning to become increasingly more logistically complex. With the help of technology, we can create a future where a larger number of students have access to material and are able to communicate without hesitance or a need to spend large amounts of money.
