Farmers are the backbone of any civilization they play a vital role in our day to day lives. Farmers are responsible for the food we put on our tables every day. Irrespective of civilization, cast and creed every country is giving importance to farmers .But does farmers really receiving this importance because along with the agriculture sector development number of farmers suicides are also increasing simultaneously. According to the reports one farmer is committing suicide for every 34 minutes shows the severity of farmers condition.
Farmers suicides is not unfamiliar to India because each and every day we used to hear a lot of sad and painful stories of farmers who commit suicides. This condition doesn’t confined only to poverty there are multiple reasons which includes Indebness , poverty, farming problems , Illness and few other reasons . Monsoon failure , genetically modified crops and lack of proper application of government policies also being causes of farmer suicides. Among this Indebness is only causing 39.6 % of farmers suicides followed by farming problems 19.9 % and various family problems causes 12 % of farmer suicides. Maharashtra records highest number of farmer suicides followed by states like telangana and Karnataka.
Due to lack of proper facilities for farming and its uncertainty large number of farmers are leaving agriculture which results huge drop of farmers in past 10 years which should be seriously considered by the governments. Rather than blaming one another governments should concentrate on root causes and try to solve the issue as soon as possible. By providing proper financial assistance for crop failures, during natural calamities and taking necessary actions to reach all government schemes to each and every farmer will give a moral support to farmers and helps to reduces this suicides . Along with the government organizations and organized sectors huge number of agriculture ngos in India are also trying to address issues and helping farmers to get out of this situation.
There are large number of agriculture ngos which are working on various farming problems individually to their best to create a meaning full solution to farmers issues . By creating awareness on government schemes , training farmers on latest farming technologies , helping them to market their produce at good price etc. All these attempts from Ngos should also be supported by governments so that we can see India as a country with zero percent farmers suicides.
